Launch of the H2020 European project MAGNITUDE

Efficacity will take part over the next 3 years in MAGNITUDE, the European H2020 project coordinated by EDF involving 16 partners from 9 European countries (France, Austria, United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark and Germany), to tackle the challenge of establishing a common framework for technical solutions and business models for energy systems.

List of Magnitude project partners:

The European 2020 and 2030 renewable energy targets call for significant changes in the energy systems currently in place. In particular, there is a growing need for more flexibility to ensure that the electricity system operates efficiently and reliably.

The project partners at the launch meeting in Brussels on 9 and 10 October 2017.

Launched in October 2017, the project aims to develop commercial and market mechanisms, as well as to support coordination tools to provide flexibility to the European electricity system, by reinforcing synergies between electricity, heating/cooling and gas systems. The main objectives of MAGNITUDE are to:

  • Provide technological and operational tools to introduce flexibility into the electricity system by means of multi-energy systems.
  • Develop enhanced business and market mechanisms and identify potential regulatory evolutions to exploit the full potential value of the flexibility provided.
  • Validate the project results on seven real-life case studies of multi-energy systems of different sizes and technological features, located in seven European countries.
  • Propose recommendations and contribute to the definition of policy strategies from a pan-European perspective. Disseminate the project achievements to stakeholders in the electricity, heat and gas sectors to raise awareness and foster closer collaboration.

Efficacity will play an active part in the project, deploying a number of engineers and economists from different backgrounds over the entire duration of the project. One of Efficacity’s main tasks will be to liaise with the French territory chosen as the test case, the EPA Paris Saclay.
